Chinese Official: 3G Licenses Should Be Issued in 2006
July 08, 2005
According to a report in the People's Daily, which cited Deng Shoupeng who is the director of a State Council think tank called Development Research Center, China should issue 3G licenses in 2006. Deng was also reported as saying that all three major standards, including China's own TD-SCDMA, Europe's WCDMA and Qualcomm-developed CDMA2000, should be granted one license each in order to stimulate fair competition. China originally planned to start handing out 3G licenses at the end of 2005, but recently rumors have been quite persistent that the Chinese government has changed this date to sometime during 2006.
